Emmanuel Participated in SU Splash

2017 Nov 27

Samuel Emmanuel learned the value of helping others this past summer by participating in SU SPLASH (Students Promoting Leadership and Awareness in Serving the Homeless).

This opportunity was coordinated by the David '69 and Sharon Johnson Center for Civic Engagement. The project is divided into two parts, with students spending time throughout the Selinsgrove area before traveling to the urban landscape of Washington, D.C. In both locations, students participate in service-learning activities designed to teach them about the realities of homelessness.

This summer, students, faculty, and staff served at the HandUp Foundation, Capitol Hill United Methodist Church, A Wider Circle, Thrive D.C., D.C. Central Kitchen and Capital Area Food Bank. They also stopped at some cultural sites in DC, such as Smithsonian museums, National Geographic and the White House. Another major aspect of the program was Bread for the Journey, the portion of the D.C. trip where they distributed toiletries and food to people experiencing homelessness. Students collected donations from home before arriving at SU. The program also included a significant amount of reflection and discussion about the causes and effects of homelessness.
