Hummel Embarks on Self-Designed Study Abroad Experience

2017 Jun 5

Chad Hummel is studying abroad this summer in Dublin, Ireland, as part of Susquehanna University's Global Opportunities (GO) program.

In addition to providing numerous established GO programs led by university faculty, Susquehanna also gives students the opportunity to develop their own study abroad program through GO Your Own Way (GYOW). This experience is a minimum two-week immersion in a cultural setting different form one's own and can be completed either in a foreign country or within the United States. In the past, students who have decided to GYOW have participated in cross-cultural service trips, cross-cultural internships, a summer program through an outside vendor, or have taken summer classes in a cross-cultural setting.

As a cross-cultural requirement, study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. All students spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own, in the U.S. or abroad. Students reflect upon their experiences when they return, guided by faculty members and coursework that promotes discovery and personal growth. Susquehanna students can choose from study-away programs, ranging from a few weeks to a full semester, in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Europe, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, among other options.
