Mannarino Seeks Travel Writing Inspiration in South Africa

Jillian Mannarino was one of 15 students from Susquehanna University who recently studied in South Africa as part of the university's Global Opportunities (GO) program.

Travel Writing in South Africa allows students to spend two and a half weeks exploring South Africa, followed by a travel writing workshop in the fall. Students spend ten days in a traditional Xhosa village at Mdumbi, where they meet with traditional diviners and chiefs and enjoy dishes such as lamb and tomato curries and pancakes stuffed with fresh mangoes. Students also visit Cape Town to tour a black South African township, bargain at the biggest handicrafts market in Africa and visit mosques and museums. As they travel, time is set aside for journaling about their experiences.

As a cross-cultural requirement, study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. All students spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own, in the U.S. or abroad. Students reflect upon their experiences when they return, guided by faculty members and coursework that promotes discovery and personal growth. Susquehanna students can choose from study-away programs, ranging from a few weeks to a full semester, in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Europe, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, among other options.
