Nicholson Explores History and Theatre in the Czech Republic
2017 Jun 2
Carolina Nicholson was one of 16 students from Susquehanna University who recently spent time in the Czech Republic as part of the university's Global Opportunities (GO) program. The required cross-cultural GO program exposes students to different cultures as a way of teaching them more about their own while they grow into globally minded citizens.
The study-away experience, titled Czech Theatre and History, compares the medieval history of Cesky Krumlov with the modern pop culture of a dynamic EU nation. From the Holy Roman Empire, to the Holocaust, to the Velvet Revolution, students unraveled Prague's historical legacies and examined the architecture and design that stimulate post-Communist life in these unique settings.
As a cross-cultural requirement, study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. All students spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own, in the U.S. or abroad. Students reflect upon their experiences when they return, guided by faculty members and coursework that promotes discovery and personal growth.
