Spear Experiences the Heart of Spanish Culture

2016 Jul 18

Julia Spear was one of nine students from Susquehanna University who recently spent time in Spain as part of the university's Global Opportunities (GO) program.

Centered in the city of Seville, Spanish Language and Culture gives students the opportunity to stay with host families while improving their Spanish language skills. Students have a variety of academic opportunities at their disposal, choosing from 300-level Spanish courses, a business course on the European union, a Psychology of Learning a Second Language course, and a Spanish for Health Professionals course. Meanwhile, they are immersed in all areas of the culture, including flamenco dance and Spanish cuisine, and explore religious and historical sites like the Cathedral and the Alcazar.

As a cross-cultural requirement, study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. All students spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own, in the U.S. or abroad. Students reflect upon their experiences when they return, guided by faculty members and coursework that promotes discovery and personal growth. Susquehanna students can choose from study-away programs, ranging from a few weeks to a full semester, in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Europe, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, among other options.
