Wilt Learns Through Service During Trip to the Philippines

2016 Jul 18

Ian Wilt was one of six students from Susquehanna University who recently spent two weeks in the Philippines as part of the university's Global Opportunities (GO) program.

The PLUS (Philippines: Learning, Understanding, and Service) experience utilized education, service, and recreation to immerse students in the Philippine culture. Located in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite, this program allowed students to open their minds to a different culture and way of life through service-learning. Through fundraising and hard work, students were able to bring food, medicine and shelter to those they helped in the Philippines.

Study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. In addition to optional study-away arrangements, Susquehanna is distinguished by its GO program, which requires all students to spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own. Students reflect upon their experiences when they return, guided by faculty members and coursework that promotes discovery and personal growth.Currently, Susquehanna students can choose from study-away programs, ranging from a few weeks to as long as a full semester, in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Europe, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., among other options.
